Forming a band

guitarsInstruments are not cheap. You can buy a second-hand guitar or set of drums from the local music shop. This will suffice in the early days when you have just got together and practise for the first time – but you won’t be satisfied with this for long – unless of course you’ve just got together for a laugh and have no intention in playing seriously.

At some stage (and certainly if you intend performing in front of an audience), you will need some quality instruments and equipment and these are by no means cheap. A guitarist will almost certainly want to own a guitar of his choice and he will spend many hours searching for the right one that suits his style of playing. Take a look at any band on the road (famous or not) and you will see that the guitarist will have his or her own personal guitar – they may have more than one, but you won’t see them playing someone else’s, except under extreme circumstances.

Then there’s the amplification system. How many times have you seen a band and said “I can’t tell what they’re singing about” or “I can’t hear the lead guitar – is he playing it or not??” I know I have. If money is no object then rent or buy the best there is. If however every penny counts - be sensible. Put yourself in the place of a fan. Don’t play in venues that are too big if your equipment can’t handle it – nobody get’s any pleasure out of it. The opposite is also true, don’t play in the local pub with amplification designed for Wembley Stadium, unless you’re a budding AC/DC!!
